Conceived as a suite for a single accordion, David Lang’s soundtrack for the forthcoming Bill Morrison film (slated for theatrical release later this year via Kino Lorber) evokes a remarkable turn into folk traditions inspired by Russian storytelling. The music — played with elegance and emotion by Norwegian accordionist Frode Andersen — is further propelled by the haunting theme “I cross the field,” which features the indelible voice of Shara Nova, known for her work with My Brightest Diamond and Lang’s own death speaks project.

When Morrison learned in 2016 that several reels of an old Soviet film called Derevensky Detektiv had been recovered by a fisherman off the coast of Iceland, he knew he had the makings of his own detective yarn. “The story involves a stolen accordion,” he explains, “and I started to think about that instrument as a set of lungs that is found in the folk music of people all across the globe. The extraordinary music David wrote perfectly captures this, and the beautiful, tragic and inexorable drift of time.”
